Collage - 4 Types

There are 4 different types of Collages.

Papier colle - loosely meaning "pasted paper" or "paper cut-out", it is a collage technique where printed paper is applied to a surface for example a canvas, in order to create a new image.

Examples of this method can be seen through the work of:

Picasso, Braque and Juan Gris

Decoupage - loosely meaning "cut out", is a method of cutting, arranging and pasting coloured paper, usually by layering, to create an image which is then sealed with varnish.

Examples of this method can be seen through the work of:

Henri Matisse [Blue Nude II (1952)]

Photomontage - this type of collage made by cutting up and sticking down photos to create a new image, this new image can then be photographed to create a seamless aspect to your piece. You can also make a digital version of this method of collage using image editing software.

Examples of this method can be seen through the work of:

Oscar Rejlander, Henry Peach Robinson and Hannah Höch

Assemblage - this type of collage is made by using three-dimensional images created by using found objects and attaching them to a flat surface to create a form of visual art which is related to collage art.

Pablo Picasso, Robert Rauschenberg
